Part One - The Cause of Chaos
Chapter 1
Work Done Wrong, At the Wrong Time,
or Not At All
The memory is as vivid in my mind today as if it happened only a few
days ago. It was a beautiful summer day and I was on the freeway heading
toward the exit that would take me back to my shop. I had a mountain
of work that needed to get done but there was a problem; I was stuck
in a traffic jam.
In the few years since I had started my business, the gnawing anxiety
that there was always more work than time had turned short delays and
minor inconveniences into hairpin triggers for my temper. And here I
was parked on the freeway while a pile of granite and my employees awaited
me back at the shop.
It was here, with my blood pressure approaching the boiling point,
that struck me
a realization so dramatic that to this day, I
remember the interior of the truck I was driving and the exact spot
on the freeway where I was stuck. It was the realization that the work
back at the shop was getting done. Most importantly, Iknew it was getting
done right, and I wasnt there!
The experience of running a business with employees had conditioned
my mind to expect everything to fall apart as soon as I went out for
lunch, stepped away for an appointment, or tried to take a day off.
I operated in a constant state of readiness to do damage control, expecting
that the longer I was away the bigger the mess Id have when I
got back.
But as I sat there on the freeway I remembered the process I had implemented
to make sure that the work would get done right and at the right time
in my absence. A new confidence prevailed, and my anxiety, wound tighter
than a titanium spring, relaxed.
I pass that exit regularly these days and I often think about that
occasion. It is a vivid reminder that a relatively simple approach to
managing dramatically changed my small business experience from one
of chaos and anxiety to control and profitability.
This transition did not occur overnight, though. It continues to this
day and it will continue as long as I own a small business because business
is a dynamic, ever evolving experience where methods that work today
may not work in six months. As such, it is not possible to arrive at
some mythical state of small business nirvana.
